Daily updates: Expedition Bosnia

Fri Jul 28, 5:39 PM ET

This month, Richard Bangs Adventures explores the rich environment and gracious humanity of Bosnia, a land that, for many, only calls up images of war. From Sarajevo to the old bridge in Mostar, up the course of the Neretva River into primeval, old-growth forests, we'll traverse one of the least-known nations in Europe. Follow the course of the expedition by using this page as your bookmark to the daily dispatches.

Bosnia hosts one of the two largest surviving tracts of primeval forest in Europe, with unmatched biodiversity, daunting mountain faces yet to be climbed, wild rivers with water so pure you can cup your hand to drink, and perhaps the last highland communities of semi-nomadic peoples on the continent. Although the importance of natural habitat is often overlooked in war-ravaged countries struggling to rebuild, their preservation is essential to the success of a nation's rebirth.

Join the Richard Bangs team and environmentalist Tim Clancy on a journey from the cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the remotest village in Europe. Bosnia: Rebirth of a Nation is our effort to meld adventure with purpose, much as Tim and others like him do when they undertake the fight to save the gifts of nature.

Day 1: Saving Bosnia from the ravages of peace
On the first day of our Bosnian adventure, activist and environmentalist Tim Clancy takes us on on a tour of his Bosnia, the land where he found peace and purpose after harrowing years as a relief worker during the civil wars of the 1990s. Begin the journey...

Day 2: Making the leap of faith in Bosnia
On day two of exploring Bosnia, the team comes across the Stari Most Bridge, recently rebuilt after its 1993 destruction.  For centuries the bridge spanned the Neretva River as a symbol of unity.  Today it serves as the jumping off point for a centuries-old tradition.  Take the dive...

Day 3: Where the river meets the road
In post-war Bosnia, the fight is now between environmentalism and development.  On day three of Expedition Bosnia, we investigate the tug-of-war between a working quarry and a proposed national park.  Read the story...

Day 4: In Herzegovina's Himalaya
On our fourth day exploring Bosnia, the team tours through the Dinaric Alps, and finds evidence to back Tim Clancy's belief that when it comes to the environment, Bosnia is a culture of misplaced priorities. Join the trek...

Day 5: Reaching the last village in Bosnia
Our last day exploring Bosnia's burgeoning modernity takes us high into the Dinaric Alps to the community of Lukomir.  Forgotten by time— and thankfully overlooked by the war — the village seems like something from a fairy tale.  Visit the village...
