Checking In

Bring on the liquids, bring on the gels

Mon Sep 25, 5:23 PM ET

Gels and liquids (yes, water!) are allowed back on board as of tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 26. At a press conference this morning, the Transportation Security Administration announced it is relaxing the six-week ban after gaining confidence to make the move after the UK changed its carry-on rules last week.

Restrictions still apply. But as of tomorrow, U.S. travelers can carry travel-size toiletries weighing 3 ounces or less that "fit comfortably in one quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag" through security checkpoints. And, yes, travelers can bring on beverages and snacks purchased in boarding areas.

Just so there's no confusion,

TSA has posted a handy photo illustrating how they would like to see carry-on cosmetics and sundries packaged.

As of midday Monday, the news had yet to hit the forums of Flyertalk, though that venue is sure to soon fill with excited posts by travelers buying and carrying all sorts of previously banned substances.

The National Business Travel Association had a more staid response. NBTA President & CEO, Suzanne Fletcher said, "While the business travel community understood the need for addressing the threat posed by liquid explosives, many business travelers have been challenged by the total ban on carry-on liquids. They often had to check bags on short trips for which they would not normally check bags, in order to bring toiletry items. NBTA has worked closely with TSA and DHS to ensure the agencies understand the particular challenge the ban posed for business travelers, and we are pleased to see the this adjustment of the rule. The change shows that TSA is listening to passengers and basing its policies on a true risk-management approach to security."

Cheers!
